Parents of nonverbal teen with special needs file notice of claim against New Hyde Park school, say teacher tied up their son

The parents of a student from New Hyde Park Memorial High School are taking legal action against the district.

The parents claim their nonverbal son with special needs was abused by a teacher.

In the notice of claim filed, it alleges that the special needs teacher tied up a 15-year-old nonverbal student to a chair last month.

In addition, it claims it was witnessed by an agency nurse and teaching assistant who were so disturbed, they reported it to the administration.

The district said to News 12 in a statement that once they found out about the alleged incident, the teacher was removed from the classroom and the proper authorities were contacted, including the Nassau County Police Department and the New York State Department of Education.

The parents of the special needs teen say one of the reasons they are suing the Sewanhaka Central High School District is because the district waited a day to tell the parents what happened.

The parents are calling the actions of the teacher and district negligent and reckless and are seeking $3 million in damages.
