Grand Jury Indicts Two Men for Local Man's Murder

Andrew Mumby, 47, of New Brunswick was indicted on charges of 1st degree murder, 1st degree felony murder, 2nd degree conspiracy to disturb human remains, 2nd degree disturbing human remains and two counts of 3rd degree hindering apprehension.

SOMERVILLE, NJ - A Somerset County Grand Jury has indicted Daniel Matthews, 44, of Brooklyn, and Andrew Mumby, 47, of New Brunswick for the December 29, 2023, murder of Franklin resident Artis Young, 46, according to Somerset County Prosecutor John P. McDonald.

Matthews and Mumby were indicted on charges of 1st degree murder, 1st degree felony murder, 2nd degree conspiracy to disturb human remains, 2nd degree disturbing human remains and two counts of 3rd degree hindering apprehension.

Both men have been in custody at the Somerset County Jail since their arrests.

McDonald provided the following account in a news release:

At approximately 6:23 p.m. on Saturday, December 30, 2023, Franklin Township Police Department received a missing person report from a family member regarding Young.  The family reported Young was last seen on Friday, December 29, 2023.

Detectives from the Franklin Township Police Department initiated an investigation into the whereabouts of Mr. Young and determined that Artis Young had plans to meet with Daniel Matthews in Franklin Township on December 29, 2023.

During the early morning hours of Saturday, December 30, 2023, Young was found deceased in Brooklyn, New York.  Once his identification was made, Franklin Township Police Department detectives were notified by detectives from the New York Police Department of Young’s death.  An autopsy was conducted by the New York State Regional Medical Examiner’s Office which ruled the manner of Artis Young’s death as homicide.

The Franklin Township Police Department detectives who began the investigation as a missing persons case initiated a homicide investigation along with detectives from the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and Crime Scene Investigation Unit.  As a result of this investigation, Mumby and Matthews were identified as suspects in the death of Young.

Mumby was arrested on Wednesday, Feb. 7, in New Brunswick without incident and Matthews was arrested on March 12 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, without incident.
