NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — New Bedford firefighters knocked down a porch fire that broke out early Wednesday morning on Clark Street.

The fire started around 4 a.m. and crews were able to keep it from spreading further into the single-family home, the department wrote in a Facebook post .

Investigators determined the fire was accidental and likely caused by “oil-soaked rags from renovations placed in a garbage bag” on the porch, according to the department.

No injuries were reported. The department said the residents of the home were alerted to the fire by their smoke alarms.
