    Man charged in New Bedford shooting

    NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — Officers have arrested the man believed to be responsible for a shooting in New Bedford Monday afternoon.

    Christopher Smith, 38, has been charged with assault with intent to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and carrying a loaded firearm without a license.

    Smith was taken into custody shortly after the shooting, which happened near Austin and County streets. Officers also recovered a firearm at the scene, according to police.

    Police said the man that Smith shot was brought to the hospital for emergency treatment. His condition is unknown at this time.

    This isn’t Smith’s first brush with the law. Police said in 2016, Smith was charged with kidnapping, breaking and entering, and strangulation. He was convicted and sentenced to serve up to six years behind bars.
