    WHA girls split double-header at Nevis

    Walker-Hackensack-Akeley and Nevis met in a conference showdown Friday on the Tigers’ home field.

    The visiting Wolves won the first game 5-4 in seven innings, and Nevis took the second 5-1 in five.

    Gretchen Turney only gave up five hits and two walks with two strike outs. WHA’s defense recorded 14 outs including 11 by grounder, and only committed one error.

    Ava Welk had three of WHA’s six hits including a double. Brielle had two singles and Alexa Gardner one.

    Paige Offerdahl took the loss for Nevis, despite striking out 12. The defense committed five errors that led to two unearned runs.

    Maria Gutierrez had a double and home run, with Offerdahl, Cassandra Bolster and Sophia Robbins each collecting one hit.

    WHA scored once in the second as Young singled and stole home.

    Nevis took a 2-1 lead in the bottom half on a Gutierrez home run and Robbins scoring on an error.

    The Wolves answered with four in the third with Sierra Wessels opening up the inning with a walk. She scored on an error, Welk doubled and stole home, Franchesca McGregor reached on an error and scored on Young’s single, who once again stole home.

    In the bottom half Nevis scored twice more as Cassandra Bolster and Emma Wike scored on errors.

    Turney only allowed one base runner over the final four innings, while WHA had two runners in scoring position in the fifth.

    In the nightcap, Nevis belted out 12 hits and added three free bases.

    Offerdahl got the win, allowing one run on five hits, one walk with 10 strike outs.

    Annabelle Bolster had three hits including a double, with Julia Durgin, Olivia Harris, Gutierrez and Robbins each having two hits. Cassandra Offerdahl and Cassandra Rice each collected a hit.

    Nevis scored all the runs they needed in the first as Harris and Offerdahl both singled and scored on Bolster’s single.

    The Tigers added three more runs in the fifth as Cassandra Bolster, Annabelle Bolster and Rice each singled. The first run scored on Rice’s single, the second on an error and the third on Robbins single.

    WHA’s lone run came in the bottom of the fifth as Vada Yeats walked and stole home.

    Earlier in the week in a home double-header, the Wolves fell 14-2 and 15-0 to Blackduck.

    This week WHA travels to Bagley and Lake Park-Audubon, and hosts Red Lake. Next week the Wolves host Lake of the Woods and play Pine River-Backus at Bemidji State University.

    Nevis travels to Red Lake, Pine River-Backus and Sebeka this week, and next week hosts Cass Lake-Bena.
