Gov. Reynolds Orders Flags To Half-Staff Saturday For WWII Serviceman’s Funeral
Gov. Kim Reynolds has ordered flags across Iowa to be flown at half-staff tomorrow (Saturday), Nov. 7, to honor a World War II sailor whose remains were identified last year. Navy Fireman First Class Robert Shove, a Washta native, served aboard the USS Canopus in the Pacific theater. He died at age 21 while a prisoner of war at Cabanatuan prison camp on Luzon in the Philippines. Shove was born in 1922 and enlisted in the Navy in Des Moines. His funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, 6200 Morningside Ave., in Sioux City. Burial with military honors will follow at noon at Memorial Park Cemetery. A celebration of life will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Sioux City Public Museum. Flags on the State Capitol Building, on the Capitol grounds, and at all public buildings, grounds, and facilities statewide will be lowered. Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, and other local government subdivisions are encouraged to lower their flags for the same period as a sign of respect.
