(CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, Calif.) The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory for a portion of Contra Costa County that are at risk for wildfires.
The wind advisory goes into effect Monday at noon and ends at 8 p.m. Wind gusts could hit as high as 50 miles per hour but will likely be closer to 20 to 30 mph in most of Contra Costa. Other areas likely affected are North Bay Mountains, North Bay Coast, San Francisco, Peninsula, East Bay Valleys, Salinas Valley and Big Sur Coast.
Marin County is among the areas at high risk for wildfires due to the enduring dry conditions.
This wind advisory comes as much of the West Coast, including all of California, is in the midst of drought conditions.
According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, as of June 1 much of the Bay Area, including Contra Costa County are in a D4 or exceptional drought.
In the North Bay, prescribed burns have been ongoing in an attempt to stifle the upcoming wildfire season.
Prescribed burns, a somewhat controversial solution to California's continuing wildfire problem, have become more prevalent as officials look for solutions to the blazes. As climate change worsens and drought increases in the Golden State, agencies will continually look to different solutions to quell the worsening fires.
This all comes after California's most destructive wildfire season last year in which more than 4 million acres burned across the state. In early May 2021, nearly 1300 acres burned in Los Angeles County, giving residents a grim reminder of last season's horrific burns.
