(CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, Calif.) Health officials in Contra Costa County announced Monday that an abundant surplus of COVID-19 vaccine doses in the county will now allow outside residents to receive the vaccine within the county, KTVU reports.

This includes residents from outside the state of California.

"We've always said that this virus doesn't recognize borders," County Health Officer Dr. Chris Farnitano said. "Now we can say that Contra Costa County no longer cares about borders when it comes to getting people vaccinated against COVID," he added.

Despite the fact that county health officials are opening eligibility up to people from outside the county, they say local residents shouldn’t worry about the availability of vaccine doses.

"In the past two weeks, appointments at the County's vaccine sites have begun to go unfilled," officials said.

On Tuesday, the site used by the county to schedule appointments showed that there were plenty of day-of appointments available.

Offering appointments to residents from outside the county is part of the ongoing effort by health officials to stop the spread of the virus.

"To end the pandemic, we need to vaccinate as many people as possible – not just people from Contra Costa, but from all over," officials said.

To sign up for an appointment for vaccination, visit the county’s scheduling site here or call 833-829-2626.

Vaccinations are also offered in the county at walk-in clinics.
