(PINOLE, Calif.) A standoff between police and a suspect in Pinole lasted hours Monday, causing the closure of two elementary schools, East Bay Times reports.

The suspect eventually surrendered peacefully and investigators recovered two handguns at the scene.

The two elementary schools, Shannon and Tara Hills, were closed for the day because the standoff restricted access to it, police said.

Police instructed staff and students at the two middle schools to shelter in place, along with residents in the vicinity of Kildare Way between Marlesta Road and Kilkenny Way.

The initial notification for the lockdown was delivered by the Contra Costa County Community Warning System. The same system was used to notify staff and residents that the lockdown had been lifted.

The school district said that additional communications for students and parents had been composed by the principals of the three schools.
