(SAN JOSE, Calif.) A Union City man has been charged with murdering a 24- year-old San Jose drag artist.

According to Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office, 22-year-old Elijah Cruz Segura allegedly stabbed Natalia Smüt Lopez to death last Friday in Milpitas. Segura and Lopez had been dating for several months.

If convicted, he could face life in prison.

“Our hearts go out to Natalia’s loved ones. We are committed to getting justice for our community against those who commit domestic violence and violence against transgender and non-binary people. Our everlasting hope is to see it stop, " said D.A. Jeff Rosen said in a statement.

Segura called 911 after 2:20 a.m. Friday saying Lopez was injured and that he caused the injuries.

Once police arrived at the scene, they discovered Lopez laying on the ground with significant injuries. She was taken to a local hospital, where she later died.

Over the weekend, dozens of people attended a vigil at San Jose City Hall to honor Lopez.

“The senseless violence against transgender and non-binary people in our communities must stop, and more protections and advocacy are needed. We encourage the community to check in with your queer family and friends to show your support and care for their well-being,” the Project MORE Foundation said in a blog post.
