Myrtle Point’s boys had a pair of athletes win a combined five events and the Bobcats took the team title Saturday in the 23-team Class 1A District 2 meet at Sutherlin High School.
Thomas Ferren won the 100 (11.16 seconds), 200 (22.56) and 110 high hurdles (15.96) for the Bobcats, who scored 89 points to beat Lost River (74) and Pacific (62).
Mason Detzler, the top thrower in the Class 1A ranks, easily won the shot put (52 feet, 1 ½ inches) and discus (151-5) for the Bobcats.
Myrtle Point’s Cash Miller also qualified for state by finishing second in the 3,000 meters (10:09.92).
Pacific’s Tucker Long won the 300 hurdles (42.42) and was second to Ferren in the high hurdles (16.56).
The Pirates also advanced to state in the 4x400 relay with a runner-up finish, the group of Kobe Ashdown, Tristan Knapp, Tucker Long and Brayden O’brien-Stover finishing in 3:44.15.
Pacific just missed second place in the 4x100 relay in a photo finish with Lost River, but the team of O’brien-Stover, Long, Ruben Watson and Dalton Steers got one of the state meet wild cards for Class 1A with its time of 45.44. The wild card are for the top finishers who didn’t qualify for state by finishing in the top two in their events or reaching the automatic qualifying standards.
Steers was a wild card pick in both the 100 and 200.
Myrtle Point’s Logan Clayburn advanced as a wild card pick after he finished third in both the shot put and discus. Teammate Billy Reynolds advanced as a wild card selection in the javelin.
Powers had one boy qualify for state, with Jayce Shorb winning the javelin with a throw of 162-9.
Myrtle Point’s girls finished second behind North Lake in the race for the district title, despite winning just one event. The quartet of Milena Miller, Jadelin Warner, Taelyn Farmer and Kenzie Robinson won the 4x100 relay in 52.32 seconds.
Jayme Padgett was second in the discus (105-0) and Warner was second in the 100 (13.50) for the Bobcats. Kenzie Robinson got wild card berths in both the javelin and 200, where she finished third. Rebekah Nicholson was a wild-card pick in the 800.
Pacific’s Hannah Long was second in the pole vault (7-9 ¾) and Danika Bushnell finished second for Powers in the shot put (30-6 ¼). Bushnell was also a wild-card pick in the javelin and teammate Kendra Bushnell was chosen as a wild card in the 1,500.
The Class 1A state meet starts Thursday in Eugene.
