He's crossed the US on foot 3 times. Meet Sacramento's real deal Forrest Gump
Dennis Godby estimates he’s heard quips related to the 1994 film “Forrest Gump” perhaps 1,000 times. The title character of that film runs across the United States more than once. Godby, a 70-year-old naturopathic doctor who lives in West Sacramento, likes to tell people that while “Forrest Gump” was a movie, he’s the real deal. In September, Godby finished a roughly 3,450-mile walk that he made across the U.S. in five stages over five years. It was only his latest adventure. In 1978, Godby ran about 1,420 miles, from Corvallis, Oregon, to near Calgary. He ran across the U.S. in the mid-1980s and again in 2011, the second time with his two sons and his nephew. On a recent day, Godby said he felt like he could immediately start walking from Seattle, where he finished his recent cross-country walk, to Sacramento. “For the first few weeks when I get back every year, I really miss it,” Godby said during an interview at his office in midtown Sacramento. “Because I’m back to, a lot of times, the mundane. And even though I like what I do, that is really exciting, being out on the road.” Godby is part of an eclectic

Did you know the Sacramento Public Library lends kitchenware? What you can borrow
Shari Nichelini worked for the Sacramento Public Library for 42 years. Starting as a library assistant, she worked her way across many of the local libraries in the system before retiring as circulation services coordinator in early 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. “So much for all the retirement plans,” Nichelini said, in reference to stay-at-home orders brought on by the pandemic. Instead of presents at her January retirement party, she asked well-wishers to bring an interesting cake pan. Thanks in part to that retirement party, Sacramento library patrons can check out hundreds of different pans, muffin tins and cookie cutters from the Shari Nichelini Cake Pan Library . Inside the Library of Things There are plenty of paper-and-ink books at Sacramento’s 28 library locations and mountains of digital materials online. But the library was an early trailblazer in building what is known as a “Library of Things.” With a library card, people can borrow sewing machines, lawn-care tools, musical instruments and more. According to Christy Aguirre, collection management supervisor for the Sacramento Public Library, Nichelini “dreamed about introducing a cake pan library. For years, she talked about it.” To Aguirre, libraries that offered more than books is a no-brainer.
