A 16-year-old teen has been charged with second-degree assault in the stabbing of a 15-year-old boy at Mount Vernon High School on Thursday.

Police say the 15-year-old was stabbed multiple times after a fight between two people broke out in the hallway. The 16-year-old was arrested.

Mount Vernon School Superintendent Dr. K. Veronica Smith says the incident happened just minutes before classes were dismissed for the day. As a result, the school was forced into a brief lockout.

The victim was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

News 12 has reached out to Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard's office for comment but hasn't heard back yet.

Police are still investigating the incident and have not released a motive.

The school district has not released any details on if there will be any extra security precautions for the school day for Friday.
