‘Biscuit’ the dog is latest dead felon to get their voting rights back from Virginia Gov. Spanberger, confused owner says

A Southside Virginia lawmaker is demanding an investigation after a constituent received an official rights-restoration certificate for his dog, Biscuit, a beagle-hound mix from Goochland County that died about five years ago. The discovery follows the “Betty No Last Name” controversy in Chesapeake — where a purported convict lacking a surname had “her” rights restored — and raises fresh questions about the governor’s vetting process just days before voters decide whether to make felons’ voting-rights restoration automatic via an Election Day ballot measure supported by Richmond Democrats. Del. Tom Garrett, R-Buckingham — who received the letter from the constituent who owned the pet — is now calling for an investigation into how Gov. Abigail Spanberger could have restored voting and jury-service rights to a deceased animal. “This is not a question of whether people who have served their sentences deserve a second chance. This is a question of whether the Commonwealth is exercising one of the Governor’s constitutional powers with even the most basic level of review,” Garrett said. “Biscuit was a dog. Biscuit has been dead for five years. Yet an official document bearing the governor’s signature says the executive reviewed the particulars of Biscuit’s criminal case and determined

Why this Waynesboro school farm is more than just a garden

WAYNESBORO — A visitor recently stopped by Berkeley Glenn before heading to the Waynesboro Education Farm behind the elementary school. When signing in, the visitor was told they could just list destination as "classroom" because the farm is an outdoor classroom. Ryan Blosser couldn't have been happier when he heard that story. As the lead educator on the farm, Blosser has known this was a classroom since he took the job, but one of his missions is to convince others of the same thing. When he heard that story he thought, maybe that was happening. The farm program began with a renewable grant awarded in 2019. In the spring of 2021, a group of students from Kate Collins Middle School along with help from Alleghany Mountain Institute began work on the high-yield farm. In 2022, district leaders reevaluated the farm's mission, shifting the primary target from general food access to direct student achievement. Last year students prepared 1,940 meals, had 5,700 lessons tied to Virginia's Standards of Learning and 8,000 hours of instruction on the farm "I'm proud of that number," Blosser said, "because it makes this a classroom." The farm has 1.25 acres fenced in and a third of

Charlottesville Regulars Have Been Sliding Into The Booths At Riverside Lunch For Decades

Some places in Charlottesville change their menus every season. One little lunch counter has barely needed to change at all since 1935. Families who came here as kids now bring their own children, and folks drive in from West Virginia just to grab a seat. The room is small, the plates are paper, and the line can start before the doors even open.

10 Virginia Restaurants Serving Comfort Food Without The Hefty Price Tag

One diner on this list never locks up for the night. It stays open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so French toast at 3 a.m. is a real option. That detail hooked me right away. Another spot runs a hot bar loaded with pork chops, beef tips, and mashed potatoes.

What Those Tiny Blood Spots Suddenly Appearing on Virginia Bed Sheets Could Mean

The first sign of a possible bedroom pest problem is not always a crawling insect. Sometimes, it is a tiny reddish mark on a pillowcase, a faint streak across a fitted sheet, or a small brownish spot discovered while making the bed in the morning. For Virginia residents, these unexplained marks can be particularly puzzling when the bedding was recently washed and nobody remembers getting hurt.
