Indie bookstore boom extends to south Charlotte
Julie Isgrigg has been serving readers for more than 27 years. Now she's the co-founder of her own bookstore . Why it matters: The Reading Tree Bookshop will add another independent bookstore to Charlotte's growing scene and give south Charlotte residents a new place to gather. Zoom in: Isgrigg and fellow bookstore co-founders David and Michelle Ebersman hope to honor the Ebersmans' late son, Sam, by hiring several workers with autism. Sam died in an accident several years ago. "David and Michelle really thought that a bookstore would have been the place, the kind of place where Sam could have worked and thrived," Isgrigg tells Axios. What to expect: The Reading Tree Bookshop will be open daily. It will sell new books for all ages. The 2,200-square-foot space will include a 10- to 12-foot 3D tree in the corner of the kid's section. Isgrigg's mother is making mushroom cap floor cushions that kids can sit on during story time. The hope is for people to "come into our forest and and put down roots," Isgrigg says. There will also be book related events, community gatherings, arts and crafts nights and silent book club. Between the lines: Fans of the 1998

‘People don't really understand' the hype, says Wegmans shopper on first day
Charlotte’s first Wegmans does not open its doors until 9 a.m., but superfans (aka “Wegmaniacs”) of the Rochester, N.Y.-based grocer are already lined up in Ballantyne hours before the historic moment. After years of anticipation, it’s finally here for shoppers at 11550 N. Community House Road. And it started early. Doors opened a little after 8 a.m. to cheers from the line. The store features dedicated cheese counters, specialty bakeries, and expansive prepared-food and dining offerings, giving local shoppers and New York transplants a taste of Upstate and Western New York. Some of the many offerings include sandwiches, sushi, pizza, and a cheese shop with varieties aged in Wegmans’ famed Cheese Caves. For those planning a trip to Wegmans later today, here’s what happened outside before the doors officially unlocked. Go Wegmans! By 5:30 a.m., the line of the store’s first customers stretched around the corner. Wearing Buffalo Bills paraphernalia, Kari Morris, Eski Kowalski and Selma Belic were the first group in line at 5 p.m. They traveled from Lexington, S.C., for the celebration. “Wegmans is absolutely epic,” Morris said. “They have amazing options.” Some of the things she’s looking forward to are the bison dip and the chocolate sponge

Charlotte airport workers union goes on strike Wednesday, citing workplace safety
Charlotte airport workers went on strike Wednesday over workplace conditions and safety concerns, according to a news release from 32BJ SEIU, a union representing the workers. Picketing workers cited low pay, unclear paid time off policies and an inadequate working environment as top concerns. The 24-hour strike involves employees contracted to work at Charlotte Douglas International Airport through ABM, a facility management company that provides services such as wheelchair assistance and cabin cleaning. The strike comes after ABM employee Colleen Coates’ death, who told colleagues she wasn’t feeling well in the days leading up to her Sept. 17 shift but showed up to work anyway because she needed the paycheck. Coates collapsed while waiting to clean an American Airlines aircraft and couldn’t be resuscitated, according to the union. She was 55. Her coworkers have concerns about workplace safety, harassment, verbal abuse and intimidation, according to the news release. They also want clear information about their paid leave. “Yesterday, ABM workers attempted to deliver a petition to management outlining their demands at two office locations,” the news release said. “The sign said open, but doors were locked and lights were off. At the other, management did not even open the door.”
