Just in Time for Spring, Mt. Laurel Provides Update on Several Recreational Areas

MOUNT LAUREL, NJ – The spring season is officially underway, likely leaving many Mount Laurel Township residents looking for things to do outside. As the weather gets warmer, TAPinto Mount Laurel sought updates on several recreational projects that the Township Council has discussed during council meetings.
The first project is updating the tennis courts and basketball courts in the Larchmont section.
These courts needed a “complete reconstruction… due to the poor soil conditions causing reoccurring cracking and sinking,” Jerry Mascia, Mount Laurel Township’s Superintendent of Public Works and the municipality’s Deputy Township Manager, said in an email.
The project will cost about $1,107,722, and that funding is coming from the municipality’s Capital Fund, he said. For the project to be completed, temperatures need to stay above 50 degrees and rain cannot fall for a few days, he said. Work crews were at the site when a TAPinto Mount Laurel reporter drove by the project on the morning of April 23.
The second project is the application of turf to the Marne Highway soccer fields.
This “area was found to be contaminated and the (Department of Environmental Protection) required the Township to take action,” according to Mascia. “One way to (take action) would be to remediate (by) clearing and capping the surface with a turf field/parking lot.” Here, too, work crews were at the site when a TAPinto Mount Laurel reporter drove by the project on the morning of April 23.
He added that this project will also help the Township handle increasing soccer registrations. Mascia said the Township’s Open Space Fund will cover the project's $4,481,318 price tag.
The third project, the six volleyball courts, a pavilion and a playground by Laurel House, was completed last spring for several reasons, one of which is similar to the reasons for the Marne Highway soccer fields, he said.
“The … number of Mount Laurel youth enrolled in the volleyball program keeps growing and the previous site could not accommodate the number of kids,” Mascia said. “The pavilion and playground were also installed to accommodate people using the Laurel House for events and parties.”
The project will cost about $991,910, and the Township’s Open Space Trust Fund will fund it.
