St. Xavier drops showdown at Owensboro; Burke powers CAL past Pikeville
The Brian Landis Era at St. Xavier High School got off to a rocky start Friday night, Aug. 21. Owensboro returned a pair of interceptions for touchdowns on their way to a 24-7 victory over visiting St. X in the season opener for both teams. It was the head-coaching debut at St. X for Landis, who replaced Kevin Wallace in January. Landis inherited a Tigers program that returned just five starters (two offense, three defense) from last year’s 10-4 program. Traevion Dillard and Tre Shemwell had interception returns for touchdowns for Owensboro, last year’s Class 5A state champion. Te’Rae Wilson-Towns returned a fumble 40 yards to pull St. X within 10-7 early in the third quarter. Shemwell had a 28-yard touchdown catch to give the Red Devils a 17-7 lead late in the third quarter. Shemwell’s 100-yard interception return made it 24-7 with 1:41 remaining. Christian Academy 41, Pikeville 0 Jackson Burke passed for 258 yards and six touchdowns to lead the Centurions over the host Panthers. Burke completed 16 of 21 attempts and threw touchdown passes to Ja’Hyde Brown (four), Andrew Greene and Carter May. Brown, a University of Louisville commit, finished with 11 catches for 180 yards.
