Three local youths have won a total of $3,750 in scholarship aid from RidgeCrest Senior Living Community as part of the company’s annual Senior Living Communities Silver Pen Writing Competition.

The three, along with four guests, were recently recognized for their work during an awards ceremony at the Mount Airy facility.

“The entire RidgeCrest community is excited for the winners’ future successes,” the company said.

Riley Halstead was named first-place winner; Emily Edwards was named second place; and Maria Turner took third place.

As part of the process, RidgeCrest established a Silver Pen committee to choose the essay topic, evaluate each submission, and to present the awards to the winners.

“It is a unique opportunity to give back to the local Mount Airy area,” the company said of the program.

In 2012, RidgeCrest’s parent company, Senior Living Communities, created the Silver Pen Writing Competition to bridge the communication gap between high school seniors and members.

“Silver Pen has successfully established intergenerational communication in the local area for 11 years,” the company said. “Each year, the program has continued to grow in success and has awarded more than $442,250 to students for college and trade school expenses.”
