MORGANTOWN, WV (LOOTPRESS) – On Thursday, West Virginia University (WVU) announced the inaugural cohort for the First Ascent program, an initiative designed to transform the future of West Virginia by retaining talented graduates within the state.

The program, launched last year by the WVU Brad and Alys Smith Outdoor Economic Development Collaborative, supports recent graduates from WVU and Marshall University who are committed to staying in West Virginia.

First Ascent aims to create and maintain a workforce through hybrid and remote work opportunities, emphasizing work-life balance, community building, and professional development.

Jessica R. Stidham, First Ascent assistant director, praised the participants.

“Our graduates are intentionally reimagining their work environment and have opted to stay close to home; it’s a true testament to their innovative thinking and desire to build community alongside their careers,” Stidham said.

The initial cohort includes Logan Chapman, Dominic DiChiacchio, Benjiman Harman, Emily Henigin, Benjamin LeBlanc, Landon Lambert, Abigail Jones, Mei Melton, Joseph Molina, Michael Oliverio, Cameron Patterson, Sherrell Taylor, Eliza Siefert, Parker Surface, and Ian Thayer.

These graduates have shown leadership, community engagement, and a deep love for West Virginia, according to WVU.

Stidham highlighted the significance of their choice.

“Their decision to stay and craft their careers here further strengthens local connections and underscores West Virginia as a vibrant, dynamic place to live, work, play and stay.”

The program offers numerous benefits, including professional mentorship, an online remote worker micro-credential, outdoor recreation experiences, and a variety of social and professional activities.

These features aim to create pathways for recent graduates to remain in West Virginia.

Applications for all six First Ascent featured locations are currently open, and recent graduates of WVU are encouraged to learn more and apply .
