WVU Police increasing patrols in high pedestrian traffic areas to discourage distracted driving

MORGANTOWN, WV (LOOTPRESS) – As part of continued efforts to discourage distracted driving and ensure drivers obey traffic laws, the West Virginia University Police Department is heightening its traffic patrols in high pedestrian traffic areas across campus and other areas of concern.

Officers have increased their presence in the following areas:

Parking lots 80 and 81 near Health Sciences and Mountaineer Station, around the Canady Creative Arts Center and Student Rec Center.

Also, the intersection of Hough and Beechurst Streets, and Near Falling Run Road.

“With the warmer weather, we are seeing more people enjoying the outdoors and walking around campus,” Chief Sherry St. Clair said. “Our team is increasing its patrols to protect our pedestrians and limit instances of distracted driving, especially in areas that people reported concerns about in our recent campus survey.”

Drivers should be extra cautious at night and in high pedestrian traffic areas, obey stop signs and traffic signals, and always yield to pedestrians.

Pedestrians should put away their phones and other distractions, cross only at marked crosswalks, and stay alert.
