Muncy, Pa. — A Montoursville man died after he drove off the roadway and crashed into a tree Saturday, police say.

William E. Messersmith, 87, was pronounced dead following along Route 220 just east of Oak Run Lane noon, said Trp. Dylan Houser of state police at Montoursville.

Messersmith was driving a 2010 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck south when he drifted off the roadway and into a drainage ditch, Houser said. The truck continued along the ditch for an "extended distance" before it struck a tree, according to reports.

Messersmith "sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash," Houser said. However, Lycoming County Coroner Charles Kiessling said Messersmith was wearing a seat belt and didn't appear to suffer any fatal injuries from the accident.

An investigation into the death continues, Kiessling said.
