Confidence is key. Even though Monticello softball lost their first game of the season, they were as confident as can be. Monticello went on to beat Buffalo, Cambridge-Isanti and Becker back-to-back-to-back. On Monday, the Magic lost 4-3 to Princeton but remained above .500 at 3-2.

“I love starting the season like this,” said senior captain Hannah Storey after the Magic went on a three-game winning streak. “Last year we didn’t have a great start so it’s an amazing feeling.

Against the Bison, the Magic scored at least one run in the first five innings to take a 6-0 lead. Monticello won 6-3 after recording 14 hits. Hannah Storey was 2-for-4 with a double and a triple. Emma McLeod had a solo home run.

Sydney Fuller was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.

Lily Kennedy pitched a complete game, allowing three runs (two earned) off of three hits and five Ks.

On Thursday, April 11, the Magic played the Bluejackets on the road. The red and black scored eight runs on six hits. Cambridge-Isanti scored seven runs thanks in part to five Magic errors.

Josi Ordorff had four RBIs and Kennedy had three. McLeod scored two runs and had an RBI. Kennedy also earned her second win of the season after allowing seven runs (one earned) after another complete game.

“She is moving the ball and she’s doing a nice job mixing it up,” said Monticello Head Coach Heidi Skuza on Ordorff’s pitching ability.

For the second straight season, Monticello beat Becker on the road. Allison Beilke, Fuller, McLeod (two doubles) and Storey all had two hits each.

This time, it was Ordorff, who took the start in the pitcher’s circle and went the distance. She allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out eight.

“I think we picked each other up and played as a team,” said senior captain Maddie Biegler after the win against Becker.

On Monday, Monticello lost 4-3 to Princeton in extras, despite getting home runs from Storey and McLeod. Ordorff pitched all eight innings and had three hits at the plate. She allowed three earned runs off 11 hits and struck out four.

On Thursday, Monticello plays Big Lake for their first home game since April 9. On Friday the Magic have a road game against St. Francis. On Saturday, Monticello plays three games; Rogers, Spring Lake Park and Moorhead.
