Sunshine returns Thursday but heavy rainfall threat looms for weekend

• FLASH FLOOD WARNING until 10:15 PM for western Fayette County, including the Powellton and Montgomery areas, as well as Armstrong Creek regions. A quick 1 to 2 inches of rain has fallen in this region this afternoon from heavy downpours. Please remember that if you encounter high water while driving, turn around, don’t drown!
• FLOOD ADVISORY until 9:45 PM for western Greenbrier, Summers and northern Mercer counties. Heavy rainfall has resulted in some poor drainage and low-lying flooding issues, including in Hinton. More scattered showers and storms are expected over the next couple of hours, which could result in more heavy rainfall.

Tonight features scattered showers and a few rumbles of thunder, mainly before midnight. Showers will be working in a moist environment and also will be slow-moving in nature, which could produce locally heavy rainfall, as an upper level low continues to spin over the region. We’ll see low temperatures in the mid 50s. Expect wet roadways tonight and the potential for some patchy fog in the morning.

Thursday features a drop in rain chances, but a few isolated showers will be possible, primarily over the mountains with a northwest breeze kicking in as Wednesday’s low pressure system shifts east and exits the region. We’ll see high temperatures in the low to mid 70s under plenty of sunshine.

Friday brings our next system toward the area, as an area of low pressure scoots up into the Great Lakes. We’ll see a warm front slide up to our north, which will usher in some warmer temperatures with a southwest flow returning, as high temperatures jump up into the mid to upper 70s. Scattered showers and storms will be expected with the combination of a warmer and more humid air mass and the aforementioned low pressure scooting in during the afternoon. Once again, downpours could produce heavy rainfall.

Saturday will be pretty soggy, with our low pressure system still nearby. As a result, numerous scattered showers and storms will be expected. The abundant clouds and showers will hold high temperatures down to around 70 degrees. This is not looking like a great outdoor day, overall. The best chance for rain will be in the afternoon and isolated locally heavy rainfall will once again be possible.

Sunday keeps the risk for scattered showers and storms, especially early, but there should be more dry time than Saturday in the afternoon as our low pressure system scoots off to the east. We’ll see high temperatures in the low 70s.

Monday looks great! High pressure will be in control and that should bring nice weather into the region with plenty of sunshine and highs in the mid 70s.

Tuesday will be dry for most of the day, but an isolated shower or two in the afternoon is possible as our next system begins to approach. High temperatures will be in the upper 70s.

Wednesday brings forth the potential for more rain showers, with a cold front approaching from our west. This will increase rain chances, especially by the afternoon, with high temperatures around 80 degrees.

Looking ahead, rain showers will continue Thursday with our front crossing. We’ll see high temperatures in the low to mid 70s. Rain chances will decrease but remain isolated Friday into Saturday with highs on Friday near 70 and highs on Saturday jumping back up into the mid 70s.
