Gossett Jr. was born in 1936 in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York. After obtaining a sports injury at age 17, he was encouraged to participate in a school play. Not long afterwards, he was encouraged to try out for a Broadway play. The rest, as they say, was history.

According to the Baltimore Police Department, the incident unfolded on March 28, just before 1 a.m., when officers were summoned to a residence following reports of a home invasion. Upon arrival, a woman recounted to the police that two unidentified men forcibly entered her home, demanding money. They purportedly claimed to have her son, 47-year-old David Winchester Jr., and threatened harm unless she complied with their monetary demands. The suspects absconded from the premises without the ransom.
