NYC finally moves students out of contaminated basement classroom after ‘too busy’ principal shirked off concerns

New York education officials will remove Pre-K and kindergarten students from a contaminated basement at a Brooklyn elementary school near the Gowanus Canal — after mounting pressure from outraged parents and The Post’s reporting on the issue. The students, who take classes in the basement of PS 372’s annex, will be relocated to other floors and to the school’s main building while state officials install additional ventilation systems to try to filter out toxic air, according to a Friday letter from District 75 Superintendent Dr. Keisha McCoy. McCoy wrote that the students will be “temporarily” relocated so state officials can install additional ventilation systems to try to filter the toxic air out of the building. Dr. Keisha McCoy sent out the letter to families on Friday. District 75 NYC A map shows the location of PS 372 and its proximity to the Gowanus Canal. Low participation leads to NY high school football team canceling season opener

A New York high school football program will not be suiting up for its season opener. After pulling out of a scrimmage, Hastings decided to cancel their season-opener against Dobbs Ferry. The news was first reported by The Journal News, part of the USA TODAY Network . The program was down to 18 eligible players, which is two above the minimum required to participate in a contest. A USA TODAY analysis suggests that participation numbers in the Empire State are on the decline , as statewide participation has dropped just under 33% since 2008 — from 38,354 to 25,874 in 2024. That comes despite New York gaining roughly 400,000 in population during that same time. “We don’t even have a youth program anymore,” Hastings athletic director Drew Wendol told Lohud. “We’ve been practicing but had four players injured before the scrimmage. We’re hoping that they will be cleared and ready to go, and we may have a couple of new kids registering.” The program went 3-6 a season ago and is 9-32 since 2021. Despite the downfall in numbers, enrollment has shot up, moving the program up to Class B in New York Section 1. With 11 seniors on the

Parents at NYC school near toxic Gowanus Canal demand Hochul resign for endangering kids

Furious Brooklyn parents are demanding Gov. Kathy Hochul resign, accusing her administration of forcing their special needs elementary students to breathe in cancer-causing chemicals near the notorious Gowanus Canal for more than two years. The PTA at PS 372 is in an uproar over the state’s lackluster efforts to mitigate contaminated air, which recent samples found is filled with cancer-causing compounds such as benzene and xylene — and seeping into the basement of the school’s annex building at 219 First St. With the start of the school year less than three weeks away, they are terrified about their children’s safety. The PTA blames Gov. Kathy Hochul for failing to protect their kids. Lev Radin/ZUMA / SplashNews.com “We are outraged that New York State agencies under your leadership have failed to safeguard the school community from documented toxic chemical threats in our indoor air for two and a half years, even though those same agencies determined that soil vapor intrusion mitigation was mandated,” parents addressed Hochul in the growing petition , that as of Friday, had more than 400 signatures. “If you cannot protect the children, faculty and staff of PS 372, you do not deserve to be Governor of New
