Voters pass bevy of local issues in Sandusky County

The Sandusky County Drug Task Force levy renewal narrowly passed, while the Sandusky County Park District tax levy renewal won with much more broad support in the Nov. 3 general election. Results for the Criminal Justice Services levy were 11,196 votes (50.19%) for the levy and 11,112 votes (49.81%) against. Results for the parks levy were 13,248 (59.1%) in favor and 9,169 votes (40.9%) against. On the local level, Sandusky County voters expressed widespread support for local issues, including tax levies, charter amendments and Sunday liquor sales. The City of Bellevue levy passed with 1,032 votes (64.46%) for the levy and 569 (35.54%) against. Clyde had four issues on the ballot. The Clyde income tax levy narrowly passed with 1,045 votes (50.85%) to 1,010 votes (49.15%) against. The Clyde Charter Amendment to section 3-1, 3-7, 3-9, which would change government officials' pay failed, with 745 votes (37.44%) for the amendment and 1,245 votes (62.56%) against. The Clyde Charter Amendment to section 3-5, which would allow electronic meetings for city council during an emergency, passed with 1,303 votes (63.81%) for the amendment and 739 votes (36.19%) against. Following levy failure, uncertain future lies ahead for Clearview, Amherst schools

Amherst and Clearview were two of the more than 100 public school districts that sought to maintain or increase funding through ballot measures. Levies failed in both Amherst and Clearview, and in the aftermath, officials for both districts have indicated that the election results will lead to an uncertain future — one where difficult decisions probably will have to be made.

Smith and Farmer win Sandusky County Commissioner seats

Republicans Justin Smith and Rich Farmer defied the big blue wave of Democratic Party wins by securing their seats for Sandusky County Commissioner. Farmer won his race with 13,017 votes (58.73%) against Democratic Party Candidate Kurtis Kuhl, who received 9,146 votes (41.27%). Smith won the race for the second half of the unexpired four-year term of former Commissioner Charlie Schwochow, who stepped down earlier this year due to his health, with 12,477 votes (56.15%) compared to Democrat Jill Simpson's 9,745 votes (43.85%). “I am very excited. We had a good night last night in Sandusky County,” Smith said. “I’ve been working hard for Sandusky County for a long time. I’ve been involved in every community in this county and I think my years of dedication in working for the county and the community helped to take me to victory.” Smith is a former Fremont city councilman, Board of Elections member and county Republican Party chairman.
