West Monroe, La. (KTVE/KARD) — Here in Ouachita parish, domestic abuse is an important issue that impacts both men and women. Today, NBC 10’S Hannah Clark spoke with a local Monroe attorney about Louisiana Law on Protective Orders for Domestic Abuse and the impact they have for domestic abuse victims.

Domestic violence is defined as a harmful behavior towards a dating partner or family member. The Louisiana Protective Order was established to provide protection for domestic abuse victims. Local Attorney, Colleen Butler, founder of Colleen S. Butler Attorney at Law, says it can be effective, but if not used, “it is just a piece of paper.”

Colleen says, “I have a judge here in Ouachita parish who I always quote. He’s always said he doesn’t sign toilet paper. It’s a court order, even if the text to the contact is an apology, it’s still in violation of the court order and he’s gonna enforce it. So, you have to use it in order for it to be effective.” This means in order for it to be effective, you must call 9-1-1 and report the abuse. If the protective order is violated, the domestic abuser can be arrested and prosecuted. Colleen says the order is enforceable under criminal law.

Ouachita Parish has resources available for domestic abuse victims such as the Well Spring and The Family Justice Center, but Colleen says the best resource is to call 9-1-1. If you or someone you know is suffering from domestic violence, call the Well Spring at 318-281-3655, or call The Family Justice Center at 318-998-6030. Or the quickest way to seek for help is to dial 9-1-1.
