Logan Federico's alleged killer in court to make a plea. Here's what to know
Logan Federico, a 22-year-old from Waxhaw, North Carolina, was fatally shot in May 2025 in a Columbia home where she was staying with a friend. Her killing set off political fights over South Carolina’s judicial system, the death penalty and a documentation error that may have kept her killer out of prison. Here are key takeaways: Federico was shot early on a Saturday in a Cypress Street rental while Alexander Dickey, 30, broke into two adjacent homes where University of South Carolina fraternity brothers were living , stealing a vehicle, a gun and credit cards, according to a May 2025 news conference with Columbia Police Chief Skip Holbrook. Dickey was captured the next day after being pulled from a Gaston home he had set on fire. Stephen Federico, Logan’s father, took the stage with state officials on Nov. 15, 2025, to push for judicial reform bill H. 4516 , which would reshape the panel that vets South Carolina judges. He said Dickey had been “arrested 39 times with 25 felonies” yet continued to walk free. Attorney General Alan Wilson, in a letter sent Sept. 30, 2025, urged Fifth Circuit Solicitor Byron Gipson to pursue the death penalty against Dickey ,
