Selena tribute helps kick off Cinco de Mayo early in the Modesto region. Here’s where, when

Two Modesto events give early nods to Cinco de Mayo. A festival will pay tribute to singer Selena and labor leader/civil rights activist Cesar Chavez. In addition, a celebration will be held at the King-Kennedy Memorial Center. Other entertainment set for the coming days includes “Tosca” by Opera Modesto.

Tribute to Selena, Cesar Chavez

The third annual Tribute to Selena & Cesar Chavez Festival comes to downtown Modesto, featuring music, a classic car show, live musical entertainment, vendors and more. There will be Selena tribute performances and a Selena look-alike contest.

Cinco de Mayo celebration

The West Modesto Community Collaborative holds its Cinco de Mayo celebration at the King-Kennedy Memorial Center. The event features food, music and guest speaker Cesar Alvarado-Gil, UC Merced’s chief campus counsel . The event is free but seating is limited and must be reserved at the phone number below.

Opera Modesto

Giacomo Puccini’s “Tosca” comes to the Gallo Center for the Arts in a performance by Opera Modesto. ”Set in Rome during the Napoleonic wars, ‘Tosca’ is a story of love, lust, murder and political intrigue,” according to the center’s website. “It tells the story of the opera singer Floria Tosca as she fights to save her lover Cavaradossi from the corrupt police chief Scarpia.”

The Opera Modesto Chorus will be joined by the Modesto Junior College Choir and the Opera Modesto Children’s Chorus. In addition, business leaders will perform as extras, bringing nearly 100 performers on stage in the Act I finale.

Knights Ferry peddlers fair

The Gold Country Peddler’s Faire returns to Knights Ferry with antiques, collectibles and handmade craft items. A pancake breakfast will be held at the IOOF Hall on Main Street, 7-11 a.m. The event is a fundraiser for the Knights Ferry Museum. There will be a shuttle bus from various parts in town to the fair.

123 Andrés

Andrés and Christina make up the Latin Grammy-winning music duo 123 Andrés, coming to the Gallo Center. Their shows celebrate the Latinx experience in Spanish, English and ASL. The concert is geared for children in prekindergarten to sixth grade. The performance coincides with Mexico’s Día Del Niño (Children’s Day).

“Come From Away”

The musical “Come From Away” tells the true story of the residents of a small town in Newfoundland who opened their homes to 7,000 stranded travelers on 9/11. The show will play at the Gallo Center. “During that fateful week, cultures clashed and nerves ran high — but uneasiness turned into trust, music soared into the night and gratitude grew into enduring friendships,” according to the center’s website.

“Girls Night: The Musical”

The State Theatre brings in a production of “Girls Night: The Musical.” The show follows female friends who venture into their past, present and future on a wild night out. It features hit songs from the 1980s and ’90s.

Josh Rosenblum Band

Josh Rosenblum started his music career in Modesto at age 16. He began to write original music and led The Josh Rosenblum Band in performances in the region for several years. No longer living in Modesto, he returns to the State Theatre for a show of rock, soul and pop. Opening will be Neil Buettner.

Hughson Fruit & Nut Festival

More than 100 vendors will be available in this open-air market with live entertainment, a car show, pancake breakfast, children’s activities and more. There will be a farmers market, food, drinks and a barrel room with cold beer and hard cider.
