MOBILE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — This weekend, the History Museum of Mobile will highlight how Colonial Mobilians ate; that’s the focus of “Colonial Eats.”

The event, scheduled for 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, at Colonial Fort Conde, will feature six different food cultures from Colonial Mobile.

Kyle Williams with the museum spoke with WKRG News 5’s Shamonee Baker and Bill Riales about the event.

LOCATION:

Williams said that although Mobile dates back to 1702, when it was founded by the French, it still has a lot in common with the food we eat today.

“We wanted to highlight foods and ingredients that are familiar to us today and that they would have used back then,” Williams noted.

Some foods such as gumbo, maque choux, empanadas, oysters, and bread pudding that many people still eat today will be among those featured at the event.

The chosen foods represent a “fusion of the cultures that were here,” according to Williams.

French, African, Native American, Spanish, and Arab, were some of the cultures that have contributed to Mobile food history that Williams mentioned.

There will be six stations with catered food at Saturday’s event, according to officials. Each station will have an interpreter who will tell attendees about the history of the food.

Tickets to the event were $25, according to Williams. But they’ve since sold out.
