Aaron Judge’s bat — and oven mitt — sparks Yankees in laugher over Brewers

MILWAUKEE — Credit Aaron Judge’s left hand for its first save of the season.

As the Yankees’ captain slid into second base during the sixth inning, his outstretched hand bore the brunt of Willy Adames’ attempted throw to first — on a play that crew chief Andy Fletcher later said should have been called interference — breaking up what would have been a double play.

One pop out later, the Brewers should have been out of the inning in a tie game.

Instead, Judge’s large paw — made a bit bigger with the oven mitt he wears that doubles as a protective glove while running the bases — gave the Yankees an extra life.

They took advantage and then some.

With two outs, the Yankees exploded for a seven-run rally, overwhelming the Brewers for a second straight day to claim the series with a 15-5 win on Sunday afternoon at American Family Field.

“That’s never happened before in my life,” Judge said. “I’ve been sliding like that for years. I was more concerned about how Adames has a great arm and I thought I broke my finger there.”

Between Saturday and Sunday, the Yankees (19-10) relentlessly piled up 30 runs on 37 hits, showing more signs of breaking out in full — and again doing the majority of their damage before a position player closed out the ninth for the Brewers (17-10) for a second straight game.

“It’s huge,” said Judge, who went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a home run in his second straight game. “Guys up and down the lineup having breakout days and great at-bat after great at-bat, I think that’s what it really comes down to. Even if you’re not getting results, even if you’re not getting hits, it’s just about putting up good at-bats. If you do that over the course of a whole series, season, month, good things are going to happen.”

All nine members of the starting lineup on Sunday had at least one hit, with Anthony Rizzo’s 4-for-4 day leading the way — including his 300th career home run, a two-run shot in the eighth inning.

Anthony Volpe also belted a three-run shot on his 23rd birthday.

The Yankees kept adding on even after their seven-run outburst in the sixth inning, though Fletcher said after the game the umpires made the wrong call ahead of the decisive rally.

Brewers manager Pat Murphy had come out to argue that Judge putting his hand up — not an unusual motion in a slide — should have been interference.

The umpires convened but deemed it fair game in the moment, with the play not reviewable by replay.

“On the field, we got together and did the best that we could to come up with the correct answer,” Fletcher told a pool reporter. “After looking at it off the field in replay, it appears that the call was missed. It should’ve been called interference because it wasn’t a natural part of his slide. It didn’t appear that way to us. We did everything we could to get together and get it right. But after looking at it, it appears that it should’ve been called interference.”

Prior to Fletcher’s comments, manager Aaron Boone said he did not have much concern the umpires were going to overturn the call on the field.

“That’s something you gotta call in the moment, if you feel like somebody’s doing something intentional, which clearly Aaron wasn’t,” Boone said.

“You can look back at any picture you want of me sliding into second base,” Judge said. “That’s always happened. I really don’t know. I feel like there was plenty of time to either go around. I’m just doing my job sliding into the base.”

The extra out wouldn’t have done much good if the Yankees did not put together the kind of at-bats they did against Brewers relievers Abner Uribe and Elvis Peguero.

They went on to draw three walks and hit four singles. Gleyber Torres delivered the go-ahead single before Judge later capped off the rally with a two-run single of his own.

“It’s a very potent lineup, one through nine,” said Marcus Stroman, who struggled with his command while giving up four runs over four-plus innings. “When those guys are all swinging it, it’s a very hard lineup to navigate if you’re an opposing pitcher.”
