MILTON — Don’t be alarmed if you hear cannon fire coming from the Milton House this weekend --- it’s only a reenactment at Civil War Living History Days. This weekend, head over to the Milton House Museum to celebrate the annual event from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Starting at 10 a.m. on both days, try your hand at ax throwing if you’re at least 18, or take a vintage Tintype portrait with the help of H.H. Bennett Studio.

Kids can check out the model railroad club train show in the green warehouse by parking lot or families can chat with the Rock County Genealogical Society.

The Milton House docents will also be offering ½ tours of the historic building, with the last Saturday tour leaving at 3:30 p.m. and the last Sunday tour kicking off at 12:30 p.m.

“Civil War days is a really unique way to experience history, being able to not just hear people talk about it, but you get to actually see people living it so you get a really interactive and a really immersive experience, which then just makes it more impactful,” Milton House Museum Executive Director Keighton Klos said.

While it may look like a gathering of old-timey folks hanging out from afar, hardworking volunteers invest a lot of effort into making Civil War Days the vital, educational community event it has become.

Klos highlighted some longtime favorite attractions of the event, like the phenomenal Abraham Lincoln impersonator that comes to Milton every year.

Other reenactors will be setting up camp and having cooking demonstrations, playing Civil War Era baseball, demonstrating cannon firings and hosting a soldier’s worship service at 9 a.m. Sunday morning.

For an extra ticket price, you can participate in Saturday evening’s open house-style event at the Milton House, in which you get to know the Milton House at your own pace like real Stagecoach travelers would have, chatting with soldiers, historical Milton locals and other guests of Joseph Goodrich.

Afterwards, get a pint of locally-brewed beer from Goodworks Brewing Co. or Gray’s Brewing non-alcoholic ginger beer or root beer with President Lincoln. Information on tickets for these events, as well as a more detailed schedule of events for the weekend, can be found at https://miltonhouse.org/

The event would not be possible without the help of sponsors, including Contour Consulting, Bank of Milton, Hometown ACE Hardware, First Community Bank and Gray’s Brewing.

“We’ve had it on our site for many years, and it’s one of our biggest events that we hold throughout the year and we’re very proud as well that we can offer it as a free event for the community,” Klos said.
