Millcreek Township supervisors have voted to enact the township’s ‘disaster emergency powers’ ahead of the total solar eclipse on April 8.

Supervisors said the decision was made out of an abundance of caution, and that doing so allows first responders to be flexible in their response to immediate threats and emergencies.

“The actual time period will be from April 4 to April 10. Basically, this will allow the very quick response of our police department, fire department, our engineers and traffic signalers to get to where they need to be in a timely manner. They do not need to seek permission to assist someone,” said Kim Clear, Millcreek Township supervisor.

The last time Millcreek enacted these powers was towards the start of the pandemic in 2020, and before that, due to heavy snowfall in 2017.
