    Local Sports: Carlson tennis wins title; late runs lift Milan softball

    WYANDOTTE – Gibraltar Carlson cruised to the championship of the Division 2 Regional at Wyandotte Roosevelt Thursday.

    The Marauders had 24 points to 18 for runner-up Wyandotte Roosevelt.

    Carlson’s Rylie Sulewski was the champion at No. 3 singles while Madison Jacobs-Lia Angelos (No. 2) and Nicole Sendry-Sarah Pente (No. 3) took doubles titles for the Marauders.

    Adyson Brake (No. 1 singles) and Erin Riley (No. 2 singles) placed second and Julie Mitchell (No. 4 singles), Delaney Boller-Brooklyn Roldan (No. 1 doubles) and Chloe Hales-Allyah Newman (No. 4 doubles) fell in the semifinals.

    PREP TENNIS

    Milan takes third

    CHELSEA – Milan scored 13 points to finish third behind Chelsea (31) and Grosse Ile (15) in the Division 3 Regional at Chelsea Thursday.

    Airport was fifth with 8 and New Boston Huron eighth with 3.

    Milan did most of its damage in doubles. Ava Demond-Gwen Jones lost in the finals at No. 2 and Jessica Lubke-Ella Warren (No. 1), Maya Grimley-Rylee Kennedy (No. 3) and Clara Schlese-Ava Swaney (No. 4) fell in the semifinals.

    Airport’s Hannah Roof lost a three-setter in the semifinals at No. 1 singles and teammates Ella Gekle (No. 2 singles) and Aleeya Ridner (No. 4) reached the semis.

    Rostash falls in semis

    ANN ARBOR – Monroe’s Marisa Rostash fell 6-0, 6-1 in the semifinals to eventual champion Catherine Wilcox of Ann Arbor Skyline in the Division 1 Regional at Ann Arbor Pioneer Thursday.

    Pioneer took the team title with 23 points. Monroe scored one point and Bedford none.

    SMCC finishes in fifth

    ANN ARBOR – St. Mary Catholic Central placed fifth with four points in the Division 4 Regional at Ann Arbor Greenhills Thursday.

    Molly Blanchett (No. 1 singles), Annaleise Flint (No. 2 singles) and Claire Leach-Hannah Borer (No. 1 doubles) lost to the eventual champion in the semifinals. Elizabeth Zwack (No. 3 singles), Ionna Laskaska-Mikayla Camilleri (No. 2 doubles) also bowed out in the semis.

    PREP SOFTBALL

    Milan pulls away late

    MILAN – Milan’s softball team needed some late runs to stay on top of the Huron League race Thursday.

    The Big Reds trailed St. Mary Catholic Central heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, but scored three times in that frame and added two more in the sixth for a 7-4 win.

    Reese Knox went 4-for-4 with two runs and two RBI to lead the offense. Tierra Ronayne added two hits, including a home run in the sixth inning. Lead-off hitter Madison Mazei got on base twice with a pair of walks and scored an important run. Mariah Stines pitched well.

    Coming home: Former Monroe, Airport coach hired to lead SMCC volleyball

    SMCC outhit its hosts 13-7.

    Hannah Williams went 3-for-4 and Tori Busen, Callie Cousino and Braelyn Runyon added two hits each.

    “It was a great game and I’m very proud of my girls,” SMCC coach Dani Emery said. “They stayed positive and kept fighting back.”

    Hensley hits three homers

    PINCKNEY – Aubrey Hensley blasted three home runs Thursday as Bedford split with Pinckney, dropping the first game 11-7 before coming back for a 17-3 win.

    “Aubrey Hensley was insane at the plate today,” Bedford coach Marla Gooding said.

    Nyah Mullins also homered and joined Payton Pudlowski with four hits on the day. Kaitlyn Kwiatkowski and Briona also hit well.

    Whiteford pitchers shine

    BRITTON – Karlei Conard combined on a no-hitter in the first game and Ava Stevens allowed just one hit in the second as Whiteford overpowered Britton Deerfield 23-3 and 16-1 Thursday.

    Koralynn Billau had two hits in the opener and Avy Wood homered in the second contest.

    Sandusky, Salas shine

    LINCOLN PARK – Aryanna Sandusky and Izzy Salas both blasted their first home run of the season as Gibraltar Carlson overwhelmed Lincoln Park 18-0 Thursday.

    Sandusky went 3-for-3 with five RBI and Salas drove in four runs. Taylor Konkus and Avery McAuliffe added three hits each and Kara Ludy was 2-for-2. Addison Skinner and Hailey Sandusky combined on a one-hit shutout.

    PREP BASEBALL

    Airport thumps Devils

    GROSSE ILE – Colin Nowak, Nolan Zajac and Jayden Harper-Lewis logged two hits each to support strong pitching by Casey Monroe in a 12-2 win over Grosse Ile Thursday.

    The Jets improved to 18-6.

    Dessellier tosses shutout

    MONROE – Cameron Dessellier scattered three hits and struck out eight to lead Milan past St. Mary Catholic Central 2-0 Thursday.

    SMCC’s Brady Decator also was strong on the mound and Anthony Caladino, Drew Bylow, and Nolan Moore had for the Falcons.

    Whiteford perfect in TCC

    BRITTON – Brendan Masters and Luke Henegar collected four hits each as Whiteford remained unbeaten in the Tri-County Conference by sweeping Britton Deerfield 6-3 and 8-2 Thursday.

    Nate Stevens and Mason VanBrandt earned wins for the Bobcats (21-5 overall, 10-0 in TCC).

    COLLEGE SOFTBALL

    Liptow a national champ

    KANSAS CITY –Emmi Liptow is part of a national championship team.

    The Jefferson graduate is a member of the Concordia University of Ann Arbor softball team which beat Southwestern Christian University 3-1 in the National Christian College Athletic Association national tournament in Kansas City Thursday.

    Concordia was seeded No. 1 in the tournament and Southwestern No. 2.

    Liptow got into the title game as a pinch runner in the sixth inning and advanced to third, but was stranded there. She played in 32 games as a freshman, but got just seven at-bats. She picked up three hits for a .429 batting average, drove in two runs and stole two bases.

    Martin, Theisen advance

    WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – Bailey Martin of Airport and St. Mary Catholic Central’s Emily Theisen are members of a Madonna team that won twice Thursday to advance to the NAIA World Series.

    Martin collected seven hits over five tournament games. Theisen got into Thursday’s 1-0 win over Northwestern College of Iowa as a pinch runner.

    PREP GOLF

    Carlson keeps trophy

    GIBRALTAR – Gibraltar Carlson recorded a round of 312 to edge New Boston Huron by two strokes in its own Marauder Invitational at Lake Erie Metropark Thursday.

    Flat Rock and Carlson’s B team tied for fourth with 323 and Airport was seventh with 331.

    Jase and Jake Marcott of Carlson both shot 74 for the second-best round of the day.

    Anthony Robbins carded a 75 and Nick Kosiba checked in at 76 for Huron.

    Brayden Siders led Airport with 77 and Joel Scully topped Flat Rock with 78.

    Bahn medalist in LCAA

    ADRIAN – Carter Bahn of Dundee earned medalist honors with a round of 36 in a Lenawee County Athletic Association jamboree at Wolf Creek Thursday.

    Dundee shot 182 and Ida 183 for third and fourth place behind Clinton’s winning total of 168.

    Zackary Bailey of Ida was third in the individual standings with 40.

    Hat trick for Ida’s Allen

    HILLSDALE – Clare Allen scored three times for Ida in a 4-0 win over Hillsdale Thursday.

    Reese Wolmer netted the other goal and Jordan Ludwig, Starlynn Smith and Allen were credited with assists.

    Bedford’s Ewing scores

    ANN ARBOR – Libby Ewing scored for Bedford off an assist from Kam Clifton in a 9-1 loss to Ann Arbor Huron.

    JUNIOR HIGH SOFTBALL

    Hoskins plates winner

    MONROE – Elisa Hoskins delivered a walk-off hit with the bases loaded to help Monroe’s eighth-grade team a 13-3, 7-6 sweep over St. Charles-St. Patrick Wednesday.

    Josslyn Jones went 5-for-5 and Maeve Westerlund won both games.
