Milaca Chamber intern eager to continue path in marketing

With graduation for Milaca High School seniors swiftly approaching, graduates are eagerly looking forward to their futures and reflecting on their education journeys thus far.

Cameron “Cami” Moy is no different.

Moy’s experiences throughout high school helped her discover the path she hopes to follow through college and into her career. It all started when she took a class with teacher Danielle Mathson for marketing, which also happened to be her favorite class in high school.

“I liked Mathson a lot,” Moy said. “She really helped me through it. I liked being able to make ads and things like that to show products. We made our own cereal box and that was fun.”

It was that marketing class that inspired Moy to take a business internship class with Jen Taylor. The class gives students real experience in the workforce and also provides them with two college credits.

Through that class, Moy became an intern for the Milaca Area Chamber of Commerce (MACC).

“I like it. I’ve been doing the Facebook posts, helping make fliers, and helping with the parade to set that up. Basically a lot of digital marketing and social media,” Moy said. “Planning the parade has been busy. We made a flier, we made logos, and now we’re trying to get vendors and stuff.”

Moy has spent her final semester of high school interning with MACC for two hours every weekday morning excluding Fridays. The experience has helped her learn about managing social media pages, different online programs, and marketing tools in the real world.

“I’ve learned a lot of different online programs like SquareSpace, Mailchimp and Canva. I didn’t know anything about those, but now I do,” Moy said.

With her internship almost complete, Moy is preparing her final project for the class by creating a Powerpoint presentation about her experience with MACC, what she learned, and how she helped in her time there.

While she enjoyed her time as an intern, it was Mathson and her marketing class that solidified with Moy what she hopes to pursue for her future.

“It was Mathson’s class, and Mathson helped me decide, too. I had no clue what I was going to do, and she helped me look through colleges and things like that. She knew Mankato had a good business program,” Moy said.

Moy plans to attend Minnesota State University - Mankato in the fall to major in marketing.

“I’ve got my schedule for next year, and I’m kind of nervous but I’m excited to meet new people,” Moy said. “I’m looking forward to getting out of this small town, and finding yourself. In college I really feel like you find yourself.”

With her future plans quickly approaching, Moy is eager to walk across the stage to receive her diploma and move into the next chapter of her life.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been more excited for anything in my entire life. I’m so excited to walk across that stage,” Moy said.

But even through her excitement, Moy still finds elements from her high school experience that she will miss, including her teachers and some of the memories she made along the way.

“I’ll miss all the teachers I got along with and helped me get through high school like Mathson and (Jessica) Kunst,” Moy said. “The last year of volleyball I enjoyed a lot, and the senior trip because I got to spend it with (friends).”

Moy was an involved volleyball player throughout her time in high school, but was unable to play her senior year due to a shoulder injury.

Outside of school, Moy enjoys baking and gardening.

“I like baking a lot, and I like gardening, too. (My favorite thing to bake is) either cookies or cake,” Moy said.

When asked what advice she had for students entering into their senior year of high school, Moy said they should do what makes them happy.

“Do what makes you happy, not what other people expect of you. Don’t listen to other people,” Moy said.

Moy will be one of the approximately 120 students to walk across the stage at Milaca High School’s graduation ceremony starting at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 17.
