Savannah Tech offers new path to high paying jobs | Exclusive
Savannah Technical College is launching a new 12-week professional drone training program aimed at preparing students and career changers for jobs using unmanned aircraft across Coastal Georgia. .The program, begun through a partnership with the Unmanned Safety Institute, combines hands-on flight training, mission planning and safety instruction with preparation for the FAA’s Part 107 remote pilot certification. The college's Demo Day Thursday included flight demonstrations, launchpad setups and more. Tal Loos, vice president of economic development at STC, said discussion about the program began two years ago and that the program will provide vital services for various industries, including assisting EMS in search and rescue missions and surveying the hardest hit areas of a storm. Loos expanded on the ways the program can serve the community, citing utility inspections as one example. "If Georgia Power needs somebody going to inspect power lines, do I use a drone to do that so I'm not sending a helicopter with people on it? It's a lot easier to send a drone out and I don't have as much cost," said Loos. Entry-level positions typically start around $50,000 for operators flying drones within visual line of sight, he said. Savannah Classical charter renewed, but with no enrollment increase
The Savannah-Chatham County Board of Public Education approved Wednesday an 8-year extension to Savannah Classical Academy’s charter, although the renewal did not include some elements requested by SCA in its renewal petition. SCA’s request included an increase in its enrollment cap to 1,000 students from its current 640 student cap. The enrollment cap increase was the primary point of contention among the board, which opted on a 7-2 vote to maintain the 640 cap in the new 8-year renewal. Board President Roger Moss and District 7 Representative Stephanie Campbell were the lone no votes and advocated for the increase to the 1,000-student limit based on SCA's strong academic performance. Board members that objected to the increase cited the fact SCA has never enrolled up to its current cap and has consistently maintained a waitlist of over 250 students over the past five years. “I'm not willing to expand enrollment when you haven't gotten anywhere close to your 640 since you've been in existence,” said District 4 Representative Shawn Kachmar.
