40 years later, 1986 Saginaw Valley flood remains region’s wettest September on record
SAGINAW, Mich. (WNEM) - Heavy rain hit the Saginaw Valley region on Sept. 10, 1986, when an almost stationary front stalled over central lower Michigan. Gulf moisture fueled the storms, and the system produced a process meteorologists call “training”, in which storms rode the stalled front from west to east, dumping rain on the same areas repeatedly.

Summer 2026 among warmest on record for Southeast Michigan, NWS says
Summer 2026 in southeast Michigan was one of the warmest on record, according to the National Weather Service. Detroit's average daily temperature from June 1 through Aug. 31 was 73.4 degrees, the agency's southeast Michigan climate summary for summer 2026 said. Flint's average was 70.5 degrees, and Saginaw's was 70.6 degrees. Motown's average daily temperature in 2026 was 1.3 degrees warmer than normal; Flint's was 1.5 degrees higher than normal, and Saginaw's was 0.8 degrees hotter than normal, according to the summary. The increase in Detroit's summer average may seem small, but it was enough to land the season as the 20th hottest summer on record. Detroit's hottest summer was in 2016, when the average daily temperature was 74.9 degrees, according to the NWS. The coldest on record was in 1915, with an average daily temperature of 66.5 degrees. Detroit never broke 100 degrees this summer, the agency's summary said, but the temperature reached 90 degrees or above nine times. The hottest day in the city was July 1, when the mercury topped 97 degrees. Summer 2026 in southeast Michigan was dry for the most part, according to the weather service's report. It said Detroit received 8.07 inches of precipitation
