MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (WTNH) – Wesleyan University’s Students for Justice in Palestine joined universities across the country in creating a student encampment on campus Sunday evening.

The WSJP says that the encampment went up at 6:00 p.m. Sunday evening, behind the North and South College buildings.

The students claim that Wesleyan receives a $1.5 billion endowment from companies that profit from the war in Israel. The WSJP demand that the university cut all ties with these companies as well as with any Israel based academic institutions.

Officials at Wesleyan said the following about the encampment:

A group of student protesters peacefully assembled near the center of the Wesleyan campus. The University is closely monitoring the situation to ensure the safety of all members of the university community. The University will not tolerate violence or intimidation.

Wesleyan protects the right to protest and express one’s views, as long as those protests do not disrupt the normal operations of campus life.
