Feelin’ 33
Though the predominant image of Beethoven shows him with a scowl, it seems he had a sense of humor — it shows up in his Kakadu Variations. The theme for the variations is based on an aria from a light opera performed on the Viennese stage. The variations repeat on several levels until they sound like a broken record. But Beethoven is having fun with this, teasing us from across the centuries.
An LGBTQ+ student’s guide to Madison
Madison has been named among the gayest cities in the United States for its progressive atmosphere and rich queer history. But for many incoming LGBTQ+ students seeking community at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, starting the search can be an overwhelming task. To kick off Pride Month, The Daily Cardinal compiled a list of activities and locations in Madison for queer people to experience community.
Field notes from our staff's forest bathing outing
In preparation to present readers with a story about slowing down for the June 2024 issue, the first thing our team did was schedule a forest bathing outing with Kate Bast of Shinrin-Yoku Madison. It sounded like an excellent way to get into the right headspace for a story like this (and it wasn't exactly a horrible experience to take our own advice and spend the end of a work day out in nature).

Crystal Ball pick for Badgers and upcoming visitor
I have made a 247Sports Crystal Ball pick for Wisconsin and Chicago (Ill.) Morgan Park defensive back Jahmare Washington. Washington is taking an official with the Badgers this weekend and he tells 247Sports they are his only scheduled official. That bodes well for him to join a class that is talented at defensive back, but one where Washington likely will want to claim his spot given the numbers.

ALERT DAY: Storms move in tonight
MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - A First Alert Day remains in place as we head into Tuesday night. The main threat will be flooding rains but there is a lower risk of wind and hail with the tornadic risk being the lowest. Keep an eye to the sky and be ready to take cover as storms move through the region. As a cold front moves through Thursday, additional storms are possible. We are not expecting severe weather during this time frame. Nicer weather should return later this week with low chances of rain into the weekend.

Paoli’s first tourists
When I moved to Madison in 1988, one of the few valuables I shipped was a one-year-old aluminum Cannondale touring bike. It was a substantial upgrade from the heavy, steel Panasonic bike that I rode as a teenager on Long Island and later in Brooklyn, where I tested my strength on the hills of Prospect Park and my courage on the crowded streets to Coney Island.
