Police have arrested a McKees Rocks teen who they say fatally shot a Stowe man on Thanksgiving eve. Cy-Miar Amari Woods, 16, was charged as an adult Thursday in the Nov. 22 death of Michael Dean. Dean, 26, was killed at his house in the 800 block of Benwood Avenue,...
Jane Kitchel announces retirement after nearly 20 years in Vermont Senate
The person who’s universally regarded as the most influential legislator in Montpelier announced Friday that she won’t seek reelection this fall. Caledonia County Sen. Jane Kitchel has helmed budget deliberations in the Legislature for nearly two decades. And as the Democratic chair of her chamber’s appropriations committee, she’s played an outsize role in determining which line items make it into the state budget and which ones do not.
Huntington man moving his house 12 feet to comply with zoning rules
HUNTINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - A Chittenden County man is on the move, and he’s taking his house with him. It’s all because of different zoning rules between the neighboring towns of Huntington and Bolton. Power tools buzz at Rick Weston’s home in Huntington. But what initially looks like...
LETTER: Budget uncertainty could spark ‘an exodus of qualified early and mid-career teachers’
My name is Larry Gravelle and I’m a 20-year veteran high school English teacher who is just finishing his first year at Harwood Union High School. I live in Moretown with my wife, who is a math and science teacher at HUHS, and we’re raising our eight-year-old son in this incredible community- a community that drew us from Colorado due in part to its wonderful elementary school, small class sizes (it matters!) and overall support for public education. We are homeowners facing the same tax increases as our friends and neighbors. I am writing this letter to urge those in our community who are on the fence to vote yes on this current budget. If our community fails to pass this budget, we face losing many more student-facing positions and could, I fear, jeopardize the sustainability of our district.
Road Work | May 20-24
Road Work is compiled from reports from the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTRANS), Waterbury Public Works, and other local highway departments. Work is under way now on Guptil Road on Bridge 4 (actually the third bridge from Rt. 100 heading to Waterbury Center) just south of the Kneeland Flats Road intersection. The town road crew asks motorists to please slow down traveling through the narrow work zone. The road will remain open during the rehab project which is expected to take until mid-July to be completed.

Barre, VT- Voters in Barre have decided to return a prior mayor to office for a record-breaking 7th term, but voted down the school district’s proposed budget for the second time this year on Tuesday. Ward 1 City Councilor Thom Lauzon, who was the city’s mayor from 2006 to...
Beau Welling begins renovation of No. 1 public-access course in Vermont
Stowe Country Club, ranked by Golfweek’s Best as the No. 1 public-access course in Vermont, is slated to undergo a two-year renovation by golf architect Beau Welling. In the town of Stowe, the course originally opened in 1950 and was expanded in 1962 by William Mitchell. The club plans a growing membership, but public-access opportunities are available through stay-and-play packages at the Lodge at Spruce Creek. Beau Welling Design has drawn up a comprehensive renovation plan, with work on the front nine having started this month and to be completed this year, then work on the back nine to be completed in...
LETTER: Base your ‘no’ vote to the school budget on facts
My name is Frank Provato, and I have been a resident of Waterbury Center for 24 years. You are being asked to vote again on a new school budget proposal. Please do not base your decision on wanting to “just get this over with.” And please do not base your decision on the unsubstantiated claims by school administration and staff that further budget reductions will somehow harm the future prospects of our students. They have put forth no objective evidence to support that claim.
