MEXICO, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — It’s not bad news for the bears, but for the Mexico Tigers when they learned they wouldn’t be playing their senior night game Thursday at home.

“The boys are unable to play on the field,” said Julie Poissant, whose son plays for the Mexico Tigers.

Poissant contacted the Your Stories team saying the field has a drainage problem, making it wet and unplayable.

When we got there Wednesday morning, May 8, not only was the grass soaked, but the whole field also needed to be mowed and the baselines were almost non-existent.

This has led to the Tigers playing their home games elsewhere.

“Because we do travel to play games, we’re not getting the community support other teams are getting,” Poissant said. “People don’t want to drive 30 minutes plus to go watch a game.”

    Practices are also impacted.

“They should have the advantage of practicing outside,” Poissant said. “That’s a huge disadvantage to them.”

The district superintendent says that they will start working on the field in their next capital project.

“The field will be something that the board wants to move forward with. I think they will because it’s an ongoing agenda as something that’s important,” said superintendent Dr. Donna Runner. “Once the engineers tell us what our options are then we can look into what that expenditure is going to be.”

Runner acknowledging the current drainage system does not work and wants parents to know calls for a solution hasn’t fallen on deaf ears.

“I find it surprising that they feel ignored,” she said. “It might be because it hasn’t been remedied that they haven’t been heard but anyone who’s reached out to me directly, I’ve responded too and explained where we are and what we are doing.”

The capital project regarding the drainage system will be discussed at a district meeting on May 9 at 6 p.m. at the Mexico Middle School auditorium.
