Leon High football denied venue change to Gene Cox for Mosley game
Leon High football's pursuit of a district title hit something of a logistical stumbling block this week. As the unbeaten Lions prepare for a pivotal Week 9 showdown against Mosley on Friday, the school was denied permission by Leon County Schools to host the game at Gene Cox Stadium after submitting requests to use the facility. The game will remain at Chiles Stadium as scheduled. The district's decision came after a social media lobbying campaign to move the Lions matchup to the bigger stadium. The push was led by Shelly Bell, a Tallahassee State College administrator who is also the wife of Leon Coach Ricky Bell, whose son is Leon Athletics Director Riley Bell. Ultimately, the district decided to go forward with its original schedule, as Rickards will face Chiles at Cox Stadium and Leon will host Mosley at Chiles Stadium. Leon County Schools officials are urging administrators and coaches to follow the high school athletic scheduling procedures they collectively approved, arguing that established stadium priorities should not be ignored simply because the outcome is unpopular.
