Prep sports recap for April 8, 2024

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — Ellie Schaffer delivered an RBI single to left in the eighth inning to lift Metamora to a 2-1 win over visiting Washington in the Mid-Illini Conference softball opener for both teams on Monday.

Schaffer drove in both runs for the Redbirds. Her sacrifice fly in the fifth scored Kaidance Till with the first run of the game. Washington’s Malone McKinley cracked a double to left in the sixth that scored Laila Harris with the game-tying run.

Schaffer’s game winning hit came after walks to Kennedy Nee and Till in the eighth. Her single past shortstop scored Nee with the game winner. Nora Johnson scattered nine hits for the win while Washington’s Bailey Herrick held the Redbirds to four hits but was the tough luck losing pitcher.

In high school baseball Monday, Normal Community, Dunlap, Morton, Washington, East Peoria, Brimfield and Illini Bluffs were among the winners.
