A 24-year-old woman was killed May 2 in an officer-involved shooting, Mesa police reported Friday.

Rachel Rodriguez died in the shooting that occurred about 10:30 a.m. May 2 near Sirrine and 14 th Place where officers responded to a 911 call about a woman threatening her boyfriend with a knife.

Police said the caller was the suspect’s roommate and was outside of the house when he made the call.

“The caller reported that his female roommate was inside the home, armed with a knife, and was preventing her boyfriend from leaving the residence,” police stated in a release.

“As officers arrived at the residence, they began making announcements over a loudspeaker in an attempt to communicate with the individuals inside,” attempting to get the suspect to leave the house.

Officers then heard a man’s voice coming from inside the home and, due to the report of the woman being armed with a knife and the man indicating he was in distress, the officers entered the house at which point the officer-involved shooting occurred, police said.

The woman was brought out of the home for medical attention but died at the scene.

The man inside the home was not injured, and no officers were hurt, police said.
