Helping Hands Humane Society hits capacity, 165 dogs need homes
TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Sweet Pea found her fur-ever home while 165 dogs at Helping Hands Humane Society wait for theirs. “I came in here last Wednesday when I heard they were at full capacity for dogs. I came in and asked them what was the best thing I could do to help them and they said ‘Honestly taking a dog home’,” said Sweet Pes’s owner Melissa Weidner.

Lend a hand to “Empty the Shelters” with Helping Hands
TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Helping Hands Humane Society (HHHS) kicked off Mother’s Day weekend with its “Empty the Shelters” adoption event. According to the Helping Hands Facebook on Saturday, May 11, the event allows prospective pet parents to adopt an animal at a reduced cost. Adult dogs are free, adult cats are $25 and puppies and kittens are $50 until Wednesday, May 15. Officials with the shelter did state some “high-profile pets” will not be included in the event.

An Evergy Plaza celebration for a new site addition incorporates butterflies
TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The celebration of a new structure at Evergy Plaza included butterflies. Topeka’s Green Pest Solutions donated a new pergola to Evergy Plaza. On Tuesday, May 14, folks celebrated the latest addition with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and more than 100 local kindergarten through second-grade students participated in a butterfly release and watched an educational presentation from experts with Green Pest Solutions.

Mulvane Art Museum reopens to the public with a pair of relevant exhibitions
TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The Mulvane Art Museum at Washburn University will celebrate an opening and reopening of its facility on Thursday, May 16, at 6:30 p.m. In June of 2023, Mulvane was shut down for upcoming improvements to the facility. The renovations included an updated HVAC system and museum maintenance to give the facility a suitable building for preserving the artwork collection.
Katharina Wagner will lead the Bayreuth Festival for 5 more years
BERLIN (AP) — The Bayreuth Festival in Germany announced on Tuesday that it is retaining Katharina Wagner as its director for another five years. Wagner, who turns 46 on May 21 and is a great-granddaughter of Richard Wagner, became co-head of the festival in September 2008, along with her half-sister Eva Wagner-Pasquier. Katharina then took over as sole head in 2015.
