GLADSTONE — Menominee’s Nathan Komp and Darrent Butler captured a pair of Regional titles at the MHSAA U.P. Division 1 Region 1 championships in Gladstone on Wednesday.

Komp won a thrilling 400-meter dash by clipping Marquette’s Jacob MacPhee by three-tens of a second to finish with a first-place time of 51.53.

Meanwhile, Butler topped the high jump with a leap of six feet, two inches, nudging him ahead of Marquette’s David Williams (6’ 0”) by two inches.

Komp and Butler were two of the 13 Maroon thinclads that qualified for the U.P. Division 1-2-3 Finals, which take place on June 1 in Kingsford.

To qualify for U.P. Finals, an individual or team needed to finish in fourth place or better in whichever event they participated in.

The Maroon boys had three relay squads make the cut for U.P. Finals, as Komp, Dawson Bardowski, Landan Bardowski and Jackson Myszak placed second in the 800m relay with a time of 1:36.17.

The Bardowski brothers, alongside Myszak and Maverick Geniesse, took fourth place in the 400m relay (47.31); while Komp, Dawson Bardowski and Geniesse teamed with Brayden Bourion to run a fourth-place time of 3:42.70 in the 1,600m.

Menominee and Manistique finished tied for fourth overall in the boys’ standings with 15 points.

Marquette won the boys’ Regional title with 82 points, nearly double that of runner-up Sault Ste. Marie (44.5), while Gladstone was third with 25.5. Escanaba (5) was sixth.

On the girls’ side, Emily Schuettpeltz, Lexi Marineau, Gianna Coduti and Erin Schuettpeltz punched their ticket to the U.P. Finals with a second-place finish in the 1,600m relay (4:20.58); while Coduti and the Schuettpeltz sisters paired with Mackenzi Pesola to take fourth in the 800m relay in 1:53.81.

Pesola shined in solo competition by nabbing third place in the long jump with a distance of 14’ 11”, a new personal-best for the Maroon sophomore.

Both Erin and Emily Schuettpeltz also qualified for U.P. Finals in individual competition, with Erin taking fourth in the 400m dash (1:04.36), while Emily recorded a third-place spring of 4’ 10” in the high jump.

Winley Brandt will compete at U.P. Finals as a freshman after running the 1,600m in 5:43.88, which was both a new personal-best and good for fourth place.

The Lady Maroons accumulated six points, putting them at sixth place overall in the team standings.

Sault Ste. Marie bested Gladstone 56-43 to win the girls’ Regional crown. Marquette (30) was third, Manistique (27) was fourth and Escanaba (21) was fifth.
