Steeped in history and rumored to be haunted, the iconic Hotel Pontotoc , a downtown Memphis landmark built in 1906, is set to undergo a transformative revival.

Purchased by partners Tony Kuhn and Joseph Lewis in 2022, this iconic gem has secured a $60,000 Exterior Improvement Grant from the Downtown Memphis Commission, contributing to its estimated $2 million renovation. “Long story short, we have an opportunity to take it back to its roots,” Lewis told Memphis Business Journal .

Throughout its 118-year history at 69 East Pontotoc Ave, this storied building has transformed from a hotel featuring a Turkish bath to a recording studio, nightclub, and even a private residence. Now, the historic landmark is poised for a vibrant renaissance.

The rejuvenated Hotel Pontotoc will shed its dilapidated façade, emerging as a revitalized establishment with a ground-floor restaurant, a boutique 10-room hotel, and three cozy Airbnb rooms above. Under the creative direction of Ann Parker from Parker Design Studio , the updated space promises to radiate a funky, upscale, and vintage-inspired charm.

The extensive renovations will not only restore the building’s historic masonry exterior but will also address the extensive damage and deterioration that have plagued the structure over the years. With earthquake-proofing measures, leveled floors, and a revamped entrance featuring a new door in lieu of stairs, the building’s structural integrity will be significantly enhanced. Moreover, the roof, windows, and floor joists will be replaced, ensuring a blend of historical charm and modern functionality.

While specifics about the restaurant remain under wraps for now, the owners envision a menu of small plates, a bourbon bar, and an inviting outdoor space, as reported by Memphis Business Journal .
