CHARMCO- Fans were half asleep midway through the first inning in the Class A Region 3, Section 2 opening round of the sectionals.

Well, they weren’t really napping, but if they did, no one would have blamed them. That is a compliment to the Greenbrier West Cavalier baseball team who were relentless in a 23-0 dominating victory over the Meadow Bridge Wildcats on Tuesday, May 7.

The Cavaliers pounded out 21 hits on the night and four pitchers–Cole Vandall, Landon Doss, Landon McClung, and Scott McClung– combined to throw a no hitter in what was one of the more impressive performances of this baseball season.

Greenbrier West began the season extremely slowly and limped to a 1-10 start but finished the regular season as winners of eight of their last 10 and obviously carried that momentum into this one with the Wildcats.

The Cavs scored 12 runs in the first inning, two in the second, three in the third, and capped it with six more in the fourth.

Vandall (3-3, triple, 3 runs, 5 RBIs), Bradley Hodge (3-4, double, 3 runs, 2 RBIs), and Doss (2-3, 3 runs, 2 RBIs) all had 3-hit games to lead Greenbrier West. Braydon McClung, David Lester, Hayden Ridgeway, and Dakota Hamrick all had two hits each. Br. McClung, Lester, Ridgeway, Sc. McClung, Hodge, and Doss all drove in two runs apiece.

Basically, it was an offensive onslaught for West, but the pitching was excellent as well.

Vandall struck out four in 1.1 innings. Doss, La. McClung, and Sc. McClung combined for six strikeouts.

Freshman Meadow Bridge pitcher Nicholas Hamons has had better days. The youngster allowed 18 hits in just three innings and gave up 14 earned runs.

West will travel to Midland Trail on Wednesday evening, May 8.
