Community rallies to continue a Memorial Day tradition

MCMECHEN, W.Va. (WTRF) — A special Memorial Day tradition will continue this year after there was concern that it wouldn’t happen.
The show must go on, and it definitely will, as the McMechen Memorial Day Parade will return to the streets of the town once again this year, thanks to a group of volunteers in the community.
In previous years, the parade was run by the American Legion, but as the number of members decreased, there were discussions about ending the parade.
Fortunately, a group of volunteers gathered last Sunday to plan out the parade and ensure the historic tradition continues.
The parade will begin at 8:45 a.m. on Monday with a brief ceremony in front of Center McMechen Elementary School.
Around 9 a.m., the parade will head north on Marshall Street and end in front of Altmeyer Funeral Home.
Two volunteers share why they decided to step up and continue the long-standing tradition.
When we were small, we remember decorating our bikes and riding in the parade, and we want the kids of this generation to feel the same thing that we did.”
Susan Chincheck – Volunteer Parade Organizer
It means a lot. I want to see the tradition continue and hopefully we can pass it down to generation to generation.”
Leslie Lynch – Volunteer Parade Organizer
Any kids who would like to decorate their bikes and ride in the parade are welcome to and should arrive at the front of Center McMechen Elementary School around 8:30 a.m.
Following the parade, the Missing Man Table ceremony will be held at McMechen Cemetery, and the wreath and the 21-gun salute will be laid.
