Maumee considers requiring sewer inspections for home sales
Maumee is in big trouble with the Environmental Protection Agency, which is the main reason a sewer inspection for home sellers may be implemented. Maumee City Council members and administrators defended the action at Monday’s meeting, which was attended by 50 people. The ordinance to check for illicit connections on sanitary sewers when a house is listed for sale had been on the agenda as an emergency item but will receive more discussion before a formal vote. The next council meeting is July 22. The issue is an emergency, said Patrick Burtch, city administrator. “Sewage in a basement is considered by the EPA to be an acute health risk, and right now we’ve been doing it by dumping sewage in the river,” he said. “We’ve alleviated flooding in people’s houses by dumping that sewage in the river illegally.”
